If a total kitchen transformation is what you’re after, it’s time to redo your flooring. Many choices are available nowadays. And if you’re looking for a durable, easy-to-clean option and love the traditional appeal of hardwood, consider a wood-look alternative such as vinyl or this glazed ceramic tile, which you can also use on the wall as a rustic backsplash.
Reading cooking magazines and finding lots of recipes are thrilling. But finding your favorite recipe you want sometimes is not always easy. To overcome that trouble, cut your dearest recipe off from your magazines or internet and attach it to a piece of paper. Now here is the stinker. How will you find the recipe you want quickly among other favorite recipes you already compiled?
If you’re thinking about updating appliances or adding new ones, a kitchen remodel is the perfect time to do so, as your cabinet design will be built around your appliance specs. New appliances can give your kitchen a fresh look, but it’s important to choose the right appliances for your needs. If you don’t spend a lot of time in the kitchen, standard appliances might be sufficient. If you enjoy cooking, baking and entertaining, top-of-the-line appliances may be essential.
Fabric impresario John Robshaw's Connecticut country house is quaint and colorful. Just because the kitchen is petite doesn't mean it is any less full of life. The kitchen’s settee is by Richard Wrightman, the sink fittings are by Newport Brass, the ceiling lights are by Restoration Hardware, the countertops are marble, and the custom dhurrie is by Robshaw. The walls are painted in Rose Quartz and the cabinetry in Starry Night, both by Benjamin Moore.
Along with the above tips, you really need to make hard choices. Or, who knows--sometimes it's an easy choice. Is storage a number one priority? Then you'll need to maximize kitchen cabinets at the cost of appliances. Do you really want a breakfast bar? It's possible, but you may need to sacrifice counter space for cooking to get that breakfast bar.

When the goal is rustic simplicity, there's no need to spend tons on custom cabinetry and granite counters. Paint transformed oak cabinets, bought off the rack at Lowe's and topped with Ikea's birch slabs, while the same white semigloss brightened stools from Walmart. An old tablecloth was used as a skirt for the farmhouse sink, and classic glass cannisters, also Walmart finds, were used for storage instead of upper cabinets.
You can remove walls and cabinetry if you have the space and the budget to do it. You can even combine this space with the dining room for one large, unified area, instead of having a bar or tall wall separate the two. If you live in a condo, check building codes to make sure you can knock out walls. Also, consult with a contractor, as they could recognize that the wall is connected to a supporting beam.
In a midrange major kitchen remodel, you’re likely overhauling the whole kitchen. You could be moving walls and rearranging the layout to improve functionality. You might add an island, semi-custom wood cabinets, energy-efficient appliances, a standard stainless steel sink and new flooring. The final touches might include freshly painted walls, trim and ceiling.
Start early and take your time to find bargains. First, research products so you can evaluate quality. Next, look online and at discount outlets for deals. Keep in mind that buy in-stock merchandise usually costs less. Finally, if you find a product you like that’s out of budget, look for similar styles at less expensive retailers. You could also try shopping at reuse centers and salvage stores.
It's a visual illusion—tiny floor tiles make your small kitchen feel busy and cramped; large tiles make it feel airier and larger. One reason for this is that with the large tiles, you're reducing the number of grout lines. Go for nothing smaller than standard 12 x 12-inch tiles, but preferably larger. Shown here are 18 x 18-inch Carriage House Straw Sky tiles from American Olean.
After sanding the pallets, coat the surface with non-toxic water-based sealer and sand it again gently. To make the pallets last longer, apply 2 or 3 layers of non-toxic furniture wax made out of beeswax and olive oil. It’s such a great recipe for any wood finish. Once you finished, you can make kitchen cabinets or drawers using these pallets. Or, use them to make new open shelves.
Sometimes, you just don't have enough space for all the features of a traditional kitchen. In this efficiency apartment that has just one bedroom, one bathroom, and a generalized living/eating area, there wasn't much space for a standard kitchen. Instead, freestanding furniture (from retailers like IKEA) can be used to keep clutter to a minimum. The essential basics are still present, but this "kitchen" blends well with generalized living space by foregoing some of the traditional kitchen features, such as weighty cabinetry.
